  • II Samuel 6:23 "Therefore Michal the daughter of Saul had no child unto the day of her death."

    vs.

  • II Samuel 21:8 "But the king took the two sons of Rizpah . . . and the five sons of Michal the daughter of Saul."

Did she?

< STRONG No, she did not. "Michal" in 2 Sam 21:8 is a misprint for Merab.

See 1 Sam 18:19: "But it came to pass at the time when Merab Saul's daughter should have been given to David, that she was given unto Adriel the Meholathite to wife." Merab was not with David, and so did not have children with him, but with Adriel instead.

The NIV footnote for 2 Sam 21:8 says "Merab" is used in two Hebrew manuscripts, in some Septuagint manuscripts and Syriac, while most Hebrew and Septuagint manuscripts have "Michal."

Based on verses 2 Sam 6:23 and 1 Sam 18:19,  it's most likely that in manuscripts where "Michal" is used a transcription error took place.

The Hebrew word for Michal is   מיכל   while the Hebrew word for Merab is    מרב. They look similar.
