< He hated it, since the priests didn’t answer the question honestly. (Biblical)
Luke 20:1 One day, as Jesus was teaching the people in the temple and preaching the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes with the elders came up
Luke 20:2 and said to him, "Tell us by what authority you do these things, or who it is that gave you this authority."
Luke 20:3 He answered them, "I also will ask you a question. Now tell me,
Luke 20:4 was the baptism of John from heaven or from man?"
Luke 20:5 And they discussed it with one another, saying, "If we say, 'From heaven,' he will say, 'Why did you not believe him?'
Luke 20:6 But if we say, 'From man,' all the people will stone us to death, for they are convinced that John was a prophet."
Luke 20:7 So they answered that they did not know where it came from.
Luke 20:8 And Jesus said to them, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things."
< STRONG That's not flip flopping.
Flip flopping is defined as reversing a decision. They didn't go from believing or saying one thing to something else, they discussed amongst themselves what to say and ended up not answering Jesus.
< STRONG Those who flip-flop (double-minded) are unstable and won't receive anything from the Lord.
Jam 1:6-8 But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does.
If we believe something and then doubt, then we essentially are reversing our belief. If I go from being sure that I am forgiven, for example, to thinking "maybe I'm really not," then I am doubting, reversing my belief; I'm flip flopping. 'Unstable' in the Greek means "unsteady, wavering, in both his character and feelings." We are told that when we do this, we should not expect to receive ANYTHING from the Lord!
Why? Because when we are double-minded we do not have the Heb 11:1 understanding of faith: “Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.” We aren't truly certain if we are wavering. And we receive from the Lord based on our faith:
Matt 21:22 If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer.
Matt 8:13 Go thy way; and as thou hast believed, [so] be it done unto thee...
Mark 11:24 Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.
Luke 8:50 Hearing this, Jesus said to Jairus, "Don't be afraid; just believe, and she will be healed."
Additionally, in Matt 6:24 Jesus stated, “No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other." This reflects a double-minded man's nature- thinking he can accept and follow two differing positions. But, as we know, for example, someone cannot truly be both a Christian and a Muslim. Nor can someone believe he'll receive his security from both God and himself. If he tried to, he'd become unstable in all of his ways. It's either-or.
You can't be wishy-washy, especially when dealing with the things of God, or else you'll only be fooling yourself. For a double minded man will not receive anything from the Lord (James 1:7).
