Below are some scriptures that support this:  

Luke 14:12  He said also to the man who had invited him, "When you give a dinner or a banquet, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors, lest they also invite you in return and you be repaid.
Luke 14:13  But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind.

Lev 19:10  And you shall not strip your vineyard bare, neither shall you gather the fallen grapes of your vineyard. You shall leave them for the poor and for the sojourner: I am the LORD your God.

Lev 19:15  You shall do no injustice in court. You shall not be partial to the poor or defer to the great, but in righteousness shall you judge your neighbor.

Lev 25:35  "If your brother becomes poor and cannot maintain himself with you, you shall support him as though he were a stranger and a sojourner, and he shall live with you.

Deu 15:7  "If among you, one of your brothers should become poor, in any of your towns within your land that the LORD your God is giving you, you shall not harden your heart or shut your hand against your poor brother,

Deu 15:11  For there will never cease to be poor in the land. Therefore I command you, 'You shall open wide your hand to your brother, to the needy and to the poor, in your land.'

Below are some scriptures that support this:  

John 3:16,17  "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him." 
Please note that this verse is also for the poor. That means that they would be saved, despite their poverty.

John 3:36  Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.

Luke 4:18  "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed."

Luke 6:20  And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said: "Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. 

Luke 6:21  Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you shall be satisfied. "Blessed are you who weep now, for you shall laugh."

This means that the poor would be compensated for their misery. For Jesus also said this: (Matthew 20:16)  So the last will be first, and the first last."
